Mekong Delta and Ben Tre Trip

Xin Chao my readers and friends,

We left home early to join the tour group at Backpackers lane. We left at 8.30 and reached there at 10. We left the bus to catch a ferry after a short walk through the fruit garden. Some bought conical hats here, cheaper than Saigon...for a dollar each. Once on the ferry we enjoyed the breeze and the view, crossed some fish farms on the Mekong. From here we reached first stop at Ben Tre. The rice paper making unit. We saw how the rice paper, tapioca paper were made in a traditional Vietnamese way. We tasted some and bought some rice paper. Then we checked out some coconut handicrafts. The cutlery, the ladles, the bowls, the masks, the chopsticks and a whole lot of decorative stuff from coconut.

No bargaining in the real sense. Vietnamese become rude and annoyed when you haggle. As it is there is only the sign language and they get frustrated very fast. Pick up what ever you feel is right. It will be cheaper than SaiGon anyway.

Vietnamese have an early lunch, say 12.30, so it was time for lunch. My younger daughter is a non-vegetarian but after seeing a huge elephant ear fish being served at those tables she ran back to us, a group of five vegetarians. The hostess made us rice paper spring rolls with cucumber, tofu, basil, thyme and some rice. It was nice. Then she got us fried springrolls and hot vegetable soup with some herbs, pumpkin, tofu and mushrooms. It was just wonderful. Then came saute'd mushrooms, tofu and hot sticky rice...a nice flavored local variety. With lots of green herbs, soya sauce, chilly sauce etc to accompany. It was a sumptuous lunch. Though the ingredients for us remained same for nearly every dish the taste and presentation was different....

We roamed around a bit and tasted a delicious variant of Dragon fruit, Magenta in color both inside and out. When bitten into, the yummy magenta juice filled the mouth.

Then we said bye to this lovely place, took back our ferry to go to another place, a bee farm. But its not the honey that we taste first. We are offered to taste snake wine. Eeekkkkkkkssss looks so yuck...Aww it looks deadly with snakes and scorpion in the bottle. Well 'its for sex' thats all what the man told. It also has ginseng...okay got it, so its a kind of aphrodisiac potion. We move on. Don't think anyone had the guts to try or buy that in our group. Don't know if someone sneaked back to do that.

We were shown the bees and served some green tea with honey and tangerine. It was just the right drink for an afternoon. The honey at different places gets a distinct flavor from the flowers around that area. Here Longan was in full boom and honey was sweet and mildly flavored of longan. Felt like buying it. The price around 400 INR a kg...but carrying it???

It began raining and Mr Chu gave us some one time use raincoats. Transparent sheaths with hoods made us look like some fairy tale characters. We walked out to some horse carts and took a short sweet journey on those while it drizzled through the sunshine. It was magical. We stopped here to walk into the meandering way through the trees on either sides to go to another place for some tropical fruits and traditional Vietnamese songs and music. Mr Chu's commentary...made up for a good witty MC. We were again served tea...green tea with honey and tangerine. Then came the snake that everyone wanted to pose with. Me too. Its fun when you know its harmless...you feel you have conquered. My daughters felt different though, coz the creep actually began moving on them.

The canoes were ready and my elder one was missing. She went to play with some dog. So we were the last ones to leave the place. Mr Chu came on the same canoe. We rowed through the narrow river on palms and water coconuts on either sides. It seemed very unreal. We came out to board our ferry that was waiting there. The bunch of boys bathing in the muddy Mekong waters made a cute picture.
Muddy water bath...in Mekong...

We then move on to our final stop over for the day. The coconut candy making factory. Coconut milk, sugar and malt being cooked to thicken it. Here they make coconut candies with various flavor like Durian, Banana, Sour sop and others. I bought all but Durian. My senses just do not agree with that flavor.

Just behind this was a shop selling bag.  Bags made with snake and crocodile skin, obscenely priced. I would not care if they sold any cheaper though. And there was some hand embroidered tees and dinning table sets. Priced decently. Good buy those who appreciate hand embroideries.

We left this place to get on to our ferry. Got back to our bus through the fruit garden. Picked some wild fruit called Trung Ca, it is very very sweet. Nhi tells me that it is  Trung' Ca.. means like fish eggs, hence the name.... My my, I ate vegetarian fish eggs. LOL...  .

Back to the bus I talked with Mr Chu about other places. More interesting stuff on 18th......

17 May 2012

May be then I will go for a walk.........Chalo, its been a long blog but its not boring.

Vignettes from Vietnam 6

Hi! No blog yesterday because of a big thing........will tell that towards the end.

Ho Chi Minh City Tour

The day was great. Took a bus ride to district one. Found that curio shop lady again. She did not lower her prices. She said...'Fict'...price. Aww that is how they say fixed. So be it...I calculated 15K dong in INR...37 was not much for small brass idol. And I liked it so much that I came looking for her again. So picked 9 of them.

At the back packers' street I checked out the tour operators. Bought the Mekong delta trip from the best. It was the highest in the market...I found later when compared with others. Found that negotiations work in a cut throat competition. I did lot of talking in stupid English with the Vietnamese girls. Haggled with prices and kept asking the rates in dollars and dongs. It was nearly 11 O clock. So thought of a half day city tour for 5 dollar per person. More people means more discount.

We went to the Reunification Palace, also called as the Independence Palace.  It was the house to three puppet Presidents who worked for the other nations. From here we went to the lacquer factory in the Binh Thanh district, to see the process and the things made by handicapped people. It was an amazing and interesting visit and very informative. It takes nearly 12 coatings to get the typical Vietnamese Lacquered product that is the pride of Vietnamese handicrafts. The price obviously is very high for the quality is premium and workmanship no ordinary. There is nothing worthwhile below 20 dollars.

Back to Sai Gon, we went to the Notre Dame Church. A typical French architecture is complete with Stained glass panels on either sides. You can visit but when people are praying you are not expected to click pictures like tourists. May be take a bow and pray and leave without making much noise. It is very comparable to the lovely church at Horniman Circle in Bombay. Very similar. even the stained glass.

The post office is also a place of distinct architecture. French again. It is beautifully curated and used in the modern times. Again very comparable to GPO in Bombay except that its facade is lot more impressive and taken care of. The big Clock that is in working condition is a grand feature. Vis a vis Bombay...the buildings are relatively new as the most of the Vietnam cities were destroyed in the Vietnamese War.

Then we walked back to the Cho Ben Thanh Cho means Market. Did some shopping. Had great time looking at some good stuff and bought plenty. Just stood out for the taxi on the other side when a motor biker came and snatched my daughter's gold chain and zipped. Did not know how to react. Just got so scared that hopped into the cab and came home. Once back home I cried incessantly...how foolish to not remove her chain in Vietnam. The feeling got into me so much that my mind froze and I did not write a word yesterday. Felt so silly............

(Thank you Mona...Chatting with you had some embalming effect. Love you for that. :)

Yes, snatching bags, mobile phones and valuables is a commonest thing here and then I noticed all women had bare necks and hands. Even the ear rings  they wear aren't Gold. These guys can even hurt you back or stab you. So if you are planning to visit, come without any trace of valuables and jewelry.  Hug your rucksack and keep looking left and right. Especially watch the bikers. Even the Vietnamese I know have stories to tell about how they get mugged in their own areas. I hated it....until the sleep eased that pain......

So that was about yesterday..... Today was a wonderful day and check my next post...No 7

Keep reading......very wonderful things to come in the next blogs...

Of pleasing senses....

Food is the first one that pleases the mind and the senses and Vietnam has plenty to pamper your taste buds. A visit to the local market Than My was a delightful journey for the foodie in me. There was an array of green leafy vegetables and other colorful vegetables. The range of fruits mesmerized me completely. Check out my album to see some great natural colors provided by nature. I love trying out various vegetables and fruits and though it is very very difficult to express a flavor in words, I try my best to describe it...with local references...

Here's the link to my Pictures taken at this market...

Today we had an Avocado salad after the breakfast, followed by a sumptuous lunch with some concoction that I cooked with garlic, mushrooms, tofu and some flowering green leaves and tossed in Soya sauce. Tasted good. Evening was my XXL cup of Lemongrass tea...wait till I post the pic of my cup..you will know why it is called XXL...lol.

The dinner was cooked by the cook and was typically Vietnamese...saute'd vegetable...beans, mushrooms, bitter gourd, tofu, pineapple, bamboo marinated and cooked in Soya sauce...added pumpkin flowers in the end. Also had some Sour sop...the wonder drug for cancer... It has a distinct taste like a sour custard apple.

Had a cup of hot, home made soya milk....and calling it a day..

The pictures tell rest of the story. I wanted to write about the sensual pleasure of the other kind a la...Marine Drive or Bandstand Bandra kind. The scene is pretty cool here and no one cares. Check it out. Good night..... :)

Pardon my mistakes as mostly I am dozing off..........

Vignettes from Vietnam 4

13 May 2012

We went to District 1 Saigon. Saigon is the old name of Ho Chi Minh City. It is the second largest city in Vietnam and quite like Bombay because it is the economic and financial capital. We took the bus to go in the heart of the city. We walked around a bit. Went to the back-packers lane to collect some tour details and then we checked out some curio shops. Then we walked through a public park where someone said "Namaste" I turned back and said "Xin chao and namaste". Kids were amused. Most Vietnamese smile without an effort.

A little further in the park we heard some great music being played. It was a public performance where traditionally dressed Vietnamese musicians played traditional musical instruments. It was unimaginably good. Check out my Videos on you tube….the link..
http://youtu.be/3aam9O4tCBo

It was very hot and a cold refreshing sugarcane juice seemed just right. Its a smaller set up to extract juice and the juice is collected inside, at the bottom. Though it looked pretty neat one couldn't really make out if the left over is mixed in the fresh lot. Here the glasses are loaded with more sugar and less juice…unless of course you tell her to reduce it. Awww…did I say 'Her'…yes most small business are run by women. Women sell eatables, flowers, vegetables, fruits, curios, jewelry, clothes…..or just about anything. And they aren't easy to bargain with. As it is, it is very difficult to get your point across because of language barrier. They either write or type in the calculator while bargaining for the 'good price'. We went to the the Ban than market and found it difficult to break the ice with them. I was itching to spend some Dongs so eventually we did. We bought some dresses with a tough bargaining. Not very cheap….certainly not.

It was lunch time and we found a place in the same market where the lady assured of some good vegetarian stuff. Some mixed noodles and vegetables with some sauces. Just a bite was enough for me. I just could not say what was not right. But something refused to go down. I was a…poor vegetarian in the non-veg land. So I sneaked out to buy some roasted cashew nuts and they were a great idea. Of course certainly not for the weight loss plan. But here I will be fighting for survival….hence…Also had some freshly cut pineapple slices, some roasted corn, some boiled corn..just to try.

Lesson learnt…to pack veggies from home…next time.

From there we went to the Bao Tang Chung Tich Chien Tranh War Remnants Museum. Its a quick look into the history of Vietnamese war. As everyone read through the descriptions of various pictures and posters on display there was a sombre expression on their faces. The details, facts and figures were moving and caused pain. A lesson in history, a lesson in human psychology and may be some philosophy could be learnt from those poignant portraitures and barbaric strategies of armed forces. Here are some facts….

1.US armed forces had a policy for Vietnam war. "Burn all, destroy all and kill all"

2.Village Ben Suc is no more. It is completely destroyed in the war.

3.The war lasted 17 years and 2 months.

4.US experimented with the deadliest chemicals and used TCDD, commonly called Dioxin, barely 85 gums of which can kill a whole city with 8 million population.

5.US military sprayed herbicides and defoliants wiping out jungles, poisoning fresh water sources.

6.The chemical warfare used Agent Orange, Agent Orange II, Agent Pink, Agent Green, Agent Purple. These chemicals were used without informing even those who carried or dropped them. Everyone who was exposed to these chemicals has suffered the worse medical disorders, mutations, skin diseases, nervous disorders. Not only them but their offsprings too have not been spared of the consequences. Deformed limbs, cerebral palsies, missing eye balls, congenital blindness, rare cancer of various kinds are seen in those born even in this century.

7.The most gruesome and barbaric killings moved the heart of a 30 year US pilot of B-52 who said no to flying for Vietnam War. "I can not in good conscience be a part of it. I can live in the prison but it is easier than taking part in the war" is what he wrote. He was a distinguished and highly decorated officer with 11 medals and one flying cross yet he refused to be a part of unjustified atrocities on innocent human lives.

I strongly feel that no war in the world could be justified and no war has left any solutions at the end of it. I almost wanted to cry but I could not and as if the Gods did…as there was a downpour. We remained there waiting for the rain to get over. Soon a Vietnamese appeared with lots of thin raincoats. For 15 thousand Dongs a piece, it sold like hot cakes. The museum was crowded with people but I was lucky to get a chair to relax and catch forty winks. It rained heavily for more than an hour and finally we took a cab back home…..for a hot cup of my favorite lemongrass tea.

The dinner was early…chapatis, tofu cooked in lemongrass and yoghurt for me. The non vegetarian palette is always fuller than mine……and I am not gonna write about that...

(Did get some calligraphed key rings done by the victims of chemical warfare. These kids sit there at the museum and make small glass flowers, do calligraphy and some souvenirs….)

Vignettes form Vietnam 3

12 May 2012

Again a late night and got up late. Had oats, cornflakes with raisins and milk for breakfast along with some local mango. Took an appointment for some spa. There are some interesting details…..for the women. You eyebrows can't be threaded but these will be shaped out with a razor…it was scary but very smooth and gentle and painless unlike the threading. Awwwww no waxing too…you really have to search a place where they can. I don't need it for now…thankfully. Epilator gadget is a better idea when traveling to place such as these where most women have godly, 'pre-waxed' smooth as silk bodies. I envy these petite South East Asians.

Some friends dropped over and we all had lunch together. Chicken and rice is a staple thing but for the poor me it was that green stems with lovely buds on ends….'He' thats what they call it here…haven't seen it in India. So it was sautéed vegetables with He'. Relished it….

It rained here in Saigon South. The whiff of the first monsoon shower, when it kisses the earth, is unmistakably similar in any part of the world. I adore this.......Welcome Rain Gods!!!! The weather is so good...

We headed for Spa amidst those drizzles and had some head massage, neck massage and face massage with an elaborate shampooing and head washing. It must have been very good for I was shaken out of deep sleep after one hour 30 minutes. But it was the cost that surprised me. In India the same thing would cost around 12 or 14 dollars. We paid 3 dollars per person… I couldn't get a better deal any where in India, (smile, smile, smile:)..…I will come here more often!

So it was a rejuvenating day….. complete with my XXL cup of green tea with a good lot of lemongrass. I use lemongrass in India too but its not from the root and not so fresh and that makes all the difference.

Evening was at a recently opened mall called Crescent Mall in District 7, close to our place. Kids played games and we checked out the place. Much like Palladium in Mumbai…this place has more International Stores, Italian, American Japanese, Korean…and European. The most interesting and common sight is many girls wearing heels higher than 7 inches or more. (Desperately trying to look taller :) Incidentally, Vietnam makes the best shoes. Check yours, for the label might say "Made in Vietnam". It has happened to me before. My Adidas bought in US was manufactured in Vietnam…(^Chuckle^)

For an early dinner we headed to Dominos on popular demand of kids. Though Pizza is Pizza and same in everywhere at Dominos….the place was strikingly different. It was huge in comparison to those in Mumbai and very clean. And the youngsters patronizing seemed many kilos lighter than their distant cousins in Mumbai. I swear, one generally sees an XXL size among the lot of guys and girls hanging out there, probably surviving only on Junk food. Oh God….junk dumped inside me too. (Guilt :( :(

Took a walk back home..short walk……but it won't and it hasn't undone the guilt. No JUNK again…I grab my cup of lemongrass elixir to detox some bit. Time to hit the sack….

Tomorrow some Sunday Plan with another Vietnamese friend….gotta get up early. Bye…….^!^
